HP Jornada 680e

Switch on this ælightweightÆ 510 gram Windows CE HPC, and it greets you with a colourful animation on the 6.5 inch full-colour TFT screen, showing off a bit of the power the 133 MHz Hitachi SH3 processor is capable of. The Jornada 680e comes with 16 MB RAM as the storage media for files and other data, and another 16 MB ROM which contains the Windows CE 3.0, Pocket MS Office, HP utilities and other applications. Its memory (storage capacity) can be upgraded by adding a Flash RAM card into the slot in its base. The PCMCIA slot is right under the Flash card slot and can hold the modem or the network card. The touch sensitive screen responds well to the stylus. It has voice recording and playback support and can play MP3 and MIDI files with third-party software.

This Windows CE device is much larger than any standard digital diary or a Palm PC; so donÆt expect it to fit into anything smaller than a large coat pocket. The keyboard is spacious and amongst the largest available for a handheld PC. Unpacking and installing it to synch with your PC is an easy job. The accompanying CDs (one for HP Applications Install, another for Windows CE services) contain all the applications required for the docking procedure. Once installed, the Jornada is accessible just like any other folder in Windows. It is visible as a handheld device in the Mobile Devices folder on the Desktop. You can copy files, take a backup or just synchronise it with the PC to transfer the mail, voice recordings and documents or install new applications by using the Tool menus in the Mobile Devices folder.
